Celtic Dance / Blutkult - We Are the Roar of Thunder
Here we have a split with two strong black metal bands, first we get the German band Blutkults offerings which is four blunt and cold hymns which works as a European soldier stomping around the front lines, Junker continues his bleak black/Rac hybrid song style which he has perfected from years of loyal duty in this black metal "krieg", solid stiff upper lip material.
The musics atmosphere sounds almost like he is carving a giant hehe (not like Gaahl but in his own way of course.) and if i would pick out my favorite tracks it would be the first and the last here which has the most memoriable compositions for me. A plus for nice guitar solo leads that he incorperates as it gives the experience an extra depth to it.
Next up we have Celtic Dance from Portugal with three tracks but i see them as one long song really as the first is an intro (a nice vampyric organ playing with added militant and tribalistic drummings) and the last is an outro( acustic melodic picks from the main track that fades slowly away) and the middle one is the main metal meat.... it carries this release title and it does not let you down!
Their music here is in mid tempo (but faster the BK material) and is semi raw (vocals is the most raw and is mixed in to the music nicely and has a raspy crow like quality to them which fits perfect) the whole thing is well done and engaging with a 90´s smoking ambience, towards its end a pretty long moody acustic part concludes this in a good somber way (brings my thoughts to Bathorys Twilight of the Gods somehow) and this leads naturaly into the outro.
Solid material from both of them and even if their styles is different they work great together, it has a bit like having both old and new soldiers fighting for the same cause but with different weapons.
...And after this i got even more eager to listen to both bands recent releases that i have missed.
Track list:
1. Blutkult - Es Herrscht Krieg
2. Blutkult - Es Wird Niemand Verschont
3. Blutkult - Von der Ratte und dem Adler
4. Blutkult - Europe is Falling
5. Celtic Dance - Intro - Furhs Voor
6. Celtic Dance - We Are the Roar of Thunder
7. Celtic Dance - Outro - Arii Paracletus

Iron Flesh - Summoning the Putrid
So here we have the second and newest release from the French death metal band Iron Flesh, my previous experience with the band was from the two first ep´s where i had the honor to do the artwork to & logo. They where solid promising heavy (and groovy) old school death metal which included inspiration from different "schools" the Swedish among others....But i had not heard their first full album so i listen to that before i started to digest the new one so i could review it as good as i could.
What i found on the first album was a continuation of what i expected but better as an whole then....i got a little confused hehe as songs like Red Sky Aeon had a very Iron Maiden style riffing (but tuned more in deadly fashion) it worked but was lite odd but i understand when writing a full length one dont want to fall into traps like repeating the same formulas and become boring and such so one try to think outside the box (or coffin in this case hehe) so i get why they include stuff like this then on the next to last track of the first album the intro is a kind of clean singing reminiscent of some D&D heavy metal band and here also the guitar part reminds me of something to find in nwobhm bands but with death metal growl vocals.
So going into the new album i was prepared for death metal but with inclusions like mentioned above.
It starts off in a nice action packed ugly death metal banger that get your taste for intestines come back !
And the follow up has some of the bands best riffs och compositions, headbanging in Entombed style (getting a feel like i get on the Uprising album) Good stuff!
And the third track Demonic Enn is also one of the bands best songs, really heavy chugging riffs that takes your inner visions to fields of zombies dragging themselves forward slowly towards your impending doom, as the band said themselves "We recently played this new track live and Magick happened instantly, one our favorite track to play live !" I can totally see that.
Fourth song is a banger too and picks up the speed again and here the "outside the box" inspirations start to pop up like some Maiden like guitar parts, works neat though.
Next one even includes some dark spoken words that reminds me of Type O Negative(well not THAT deep as Pete but still) hehe, the tracks wanders around a bit around this part and the shouted vocals sounds more like the band shouts together the lyrics...this "group shouting/mixing" will be quite common during the rest of the album, this type of vocals reminds me a bit of some modern hardcore like Gallows (post Frank era) Even som music towards the end where the slower and heavier songs takes place reminds me of some bleak doomy hardcore...this is not a bad thing for me even if i feel the pure death metal atmosphere gets lost (that was in the start of the album)...... Could one call this a crossover band, perhaps not really but if the bands goes more and more towards this direction i personaly would class them as crossover band, then again if thats a good or a bad thing its up to you.
Heavy, bleak but same time bleeding emotions i pick up in the feelings conveyed here, like i can picture me that during live gigs the audience will shout along and embrace that unity of epic emotions.
In the end this album contains some of the best material the band has done but also some of the songs that leave the pure death metal arena and tries new things. (for the bands past sound i mean)
So i would say this is the best release from them from a creative point of view as they really put in work and evolved further into their own future, at one time i thought to my self if some songs here could be classed as melo-death? Dont know as i dont activly listen to that genre but some parts/songs/compositions have a very melancholic (but not so dark really either to be called depressing) melodic sound and not just ugly rotten death vibes.
All in all this is a good album, a good piece of metal for sure.
Oh and that cover art by the ever great Skaðvaldur is awesome but the putrid rotten look (and title) suits for the first songs really the best but then again one cant have more then one cover for a release heheh so i understand why they went with this piece.

scrotoculteur - Le Diable est aux Vaches
Damn this is a nasty tape!
....Imagine if Ed Gein was a satanist priest and was in charge of a blood sacrifice farm and then some sick ones got the job to put a sound-track to his jolly days of murder and sodomy ...yeah that how this sounds like.
This is a kind of a heavy chugging (also sometimes groovy!) horror/gore grind sung and screamed in French & Latin (yeah the vocals is diverse all from the guttural barks to hysteric screams, good shit!) It is primitiv in form and soul but also deeply in love with satanic ritual abuse and it is quite cinematic in its structure and atmosphere with all kinds of sound details like farm noise (pigs mucking about etc and some lady getting here innards visited by some sweet demonic prince) so its evident the boys have put in quite some effort into this project to make its experience be as poignant and revolting as possible.
Also some jew´s harp is thrown in for good (wrong turn) measure haha yeah its unpleasant and gritty and you will have to take a shower after listening to this.

Odvas - The Hunting Turmoil Of The Stormcorner Soul
Last time we visited the atmospheric fields of Odvas it was in a calm place of comfort.....some time has gone and now (fitting our times) it has sunk into a colder & uncertain place.
As i experienced the last piece of Odvas it felt that the "wanderer"(the listener) had after a long walk gotten to a needed place of rest and peace...I hope "he" rested his bones enough as this new chapter has dragged out something more dark and grand....feels almost like one hovers around a huge castle dome during the first track, as always details in the ambience is present to embellish the journeys tapestry and pin point some specific distant feelings of unease.
Now in the second track i feel the gates is opening to the castle and one is swept inside!
A higher present almost sacral atmosphere is now sweaping all around as one is traveling through the castle streets....the hostile feeling is now left ...as of now but....
...The third and last track signifies an encounter of some darker form...some pounding drums and screams in the distance... feels like this was a trap!
Yeah the wanderer has surely gotten into something dangerous and hard to escape from...Cold dry winds flow through the lower chambers of a prison as we leave for this time this story.
Yeah so these descriptions is from my own head listening to these songs and if they are anywhere close to the artists visions i cant say....but then again i think this type of music is almost made for the individual listeners personal mind paintings.
Another good ambient/atmospheric soundscapes from Odvas released by Perverse Homage.

Acid Cross - Dungeon Thrash
Well well here we have some music to raise hell to in the good old way!
...By that i mean this band could just as well been dragging their spike knuckles along the streets back in the 80´s, and more then ever Venom is the gods for inspiration and worship here!
...And that pretty common for many bands that has a first wave black/Thrash direction (which also have a healthy dose of heavy metal in it of course) so there is many bands that is to same and safe due to this but after hearing this EP i lost track of time and got into it just as one hopes to be. (but many times dont)
I have not heard all their releases so i cant compare it to all but to me this is their best material, it has its own world and it feels natural in its very British metal sound (but they are from Canada) Strong material from start to finish but if i have to pick some tracks its 3 & 5, they hit the sweet spot many times and is recomended to fans of this genre or metal people in general.(only missing now is a bad VHS taped music video ;) )
Love the cover art also, makes my think of high school D&D sessions hehe.(and i did the band logo art :D)
A good dirty rocking devil metal release that will please your pointed bat ears.

Gravespawn - The Elder Darkness
4 years ago i reviewed the previous Ep "Inexorable Grimness" which i remember i liked so when i got the chance to review this new album i was intrigued to do so...
I was not dissapointed, this is a nice continuation from the last journey (now a bit more polished and clean production i think?) filled with galliant and epic traditional blistering black metal.
Just as the cover artwork depicts you are thrown out in landscapes filled with grand bloody battles between the old powers, even if it has that blistering drums and sizzling sharp guitars they change up things more then one might think at first but as you ventures into the albums real meat you will experience some nice tempo changes and interesting compositions like in song 5, 6 & 7. Keyboards are used for that mighty old feeling, soaring ancient times glimmers in the lightning in the deep cold night.
Here the album shines the most and it takes it from a solid mid-grade to clear levels above it, had a really good time during this cut of the record not to say the other songs are bad just that these later songs just levitates it greatly.
The Slayer track could have gone totally wrong but they incorporate it great with their overall sound.
All in all a solid standard first half but from track 5 until the end this is a great album that is drenched in dragons royal blood...in other words if you enjoy this type of black metal you can go so much more wrong then to buy this release.

The True Werwolf - Devil Crisis
Now it is here after 6 years!
From the early days of enjoying the perfection of the C.N.N. / 0373 seven inch i have wanted this release in my greedy grasp, the black metal mutated Castlevania song mix could have been so cheesy and straight out bad but of course Graf would do it on point & make it better then it should be!
...Now i dont know and cant say that i hear after listening on it all that this entire album would have that game as a worship fondation (besides the songs from the mentioned 7") and after reading the introduction text from the promo sent by HHB it seems inspiration comes from many different video games music...but in the end this is very much the Werwolf show and that is just what one is after buying this release also...
For me the first thought was after the last note had died out was that this is like a continuation of the Fimbulwinter album even though its not the same project (its the same man so...) and that is a great
compliment from me, it is mighty and soaring! Every songs has great evil grand compositions that hook you into his medieval world of darkness and sorcery.
I dont need to write anymore really as this should be a no brainer to get, it is one of the best releases this year! (or in recent years really)
Released on CD and LP by Werewolf Records (with different cover art...looks like he hired some Japanese illustrator for this work).
Hells Headbangers is on the same train to push his labels releases since some years back. (Probably to help spread the Satanic Verses outside Europe)

Vampiric Dominium - ST
released the first and only demo by Vampiric dominium!
I got the chance to review this title due to its re release via Misantropologi Records which was a
obscure treat to be had.
Initially i got intrigued by the band logo (quite typical me i say hehe) and after listening to it i can say it did not let me down and i can agree that it deserves this new life it got by the label.
(original MC scan)
It is only three songs long but they make the important mark as a debut demo should i think, what we get here is some blistering and in your face satanic tunes with some solid backbone and right blasphemic emotions and fire in vocals and in the compositions as they make sure to cram into them much persona and variation in them.
It has the murky obscure atmospheres that brings your minds eye the visions of cold ritual caves painted in virgins blood.
One thing that stood out for me which seemed a bit odd (sure it has happened other times though) at first was that the bass was in the "front room" and was played almost like the guitar would and the actual guitar and drums mixed behind it....After some listenings i can easily say that this is one of this bands major possetives and makes them stand out a bit more from the crowded snowforest.
Good stuff in other words! Also the sound is surprisingly good for this kind of a demo.
I only wish there was more creations from this band....there was another tape after this but the band had now changed in its core which the slight different name change points at and also i have not heard this so i cant comment any more on the matter....
....Closest this one can get is Godless where some of the members continued as...and even here i cant say much as Godless is another chapter i need to invest more time into....dont even own a release from them.
Either way Vampiric Dominium is back from
ancient times to embrace the modern dusk !
The new layout/design is done good and nice that the label even made t-shirts for this release, total black cult metal from Puerto Rico.

Hound Ov Hel - Ragnarok
Lets not beat around the torn bush, this debut is promising.
Just as i felt about Totenwache debut i feel/hear here the importent seeds thats a new project needs and that is natural strong fire and onwardness, they play in a compact and mid paced black metal that is pretty traditional but has a nice corrupted personal soul just suited for creating their own bleak & quite grand atmosphere.
It is quite clear that the Vocals help to rise this project even higher as they have both the misanthropic smolky rasp as well as the echoing screams of a tormented (but fighting) existence....
Even if one could say the riffing is straight & simple they are selected with care and spite as they whip your back just as inteded, drums is stomp on in a endless fever and is more like a backbone for the voclas and guitars to fulfill their dark higher prophecies.
Production is nice, nothing really raw or fancy but has a good balance and organic dryness to it
It is just 4 tracks but they leave their negative mark enough to make me look forward to their next release....hehe sounds healthy i know.
A plus for the logo and cover art which was the first reasons for me to go after this.....Yeah a solid start for sure but they leave also room for growing inside this molded creation that they call Hound Ov Hel!
My eyes are plucked out and peeled!

Idolatry - In Nomine Mortis
Mutations can go either way and when you know what this word means in this context (swap of a strong OG lead vocalist) you know this can break a band!
Well we have some luck people as the band have succeded to grow a new tentacle and made it fit for this new singer to grow from and excel, it is of course a quite different experience listening to Idolatry now from before as previous singer brougth both his very own scarred and varied poetic soul & his whole bleeding wine cellar (not literally) into the band so naturally with a new singer this would not be left intact....though it works good in its own way.
So after some times spinning this album i am ready to say what i think of this sophomore album, this is a solid good effort and some songs is even really great! (i am looking at you "Hail, Death"& "Breathing Dust")...First song after the intro is one of the less good ones as it lacks some of the bands fiery & engaging melodies but it does not hurt really the overall verdict for me as the track that follows correct this immediately with some storming galloping guitar work that gets my horse into a overdrive! And then after that one the record hold its power and quality through out. (perhaps Reborn in Poison is similar standard as the first song but it is sandwiched by top songs so i cant really say for sure hehe)
This "new" Idolatry works their wheels just as good as before they only take some different sound roads & paths, the satanic cutthroat rituals is still here and i feel the band is in a good place to relish and at the same time have space to grow into a even better band in the future.
Extra plus to the two last tracks as they serves as a dark and moody ending of this creation!
Makes a lasting impression!
Take your time and check it out!
Satan is on their side i heard. hehe

Totenwache - Der Schwarze Hort
They have taken care of and expanded on all their early qualities and crafted a hour of top shelf black metal experience, if you are not familiar with the band the play in a classic mid to semi fast BM with wandering melancholic & galliant melodies, full of bleak atmosphere (quite Finnish feel i think) and layers of feeling that makes their music grow from each listen.
Enough raw (not the production but the delivery) and underground to feel true to all the important points.
Right from the start (after the nice intro) the band shows what level they stand in at the moment and one cant deny their good taste in melody picks and riffs, when you make pretty long songs with a selected few cords you easily can fall into the boring swamp so its very important to understand what make this type of song work and that is the last problem this band has...
...well do they have some problems at all (music wise) ?
I cant really pin point any at this stage of their existence really...well the problem can be to follow this up as they from the look/sound of it has made a "perfect" album...cant be easy to keep that solid quality, my tip is to do an EP first before the next full album to test out new ideas on.
One of this years top album for sure so snatch it up! You wont be dissapointed.
Extra plus for the nice book/digi packaging and artwork one cant guess that this is a self released CD!

PUTERAEON - The Esoteric Order
Oy vey, better late then never.
The album here is their debut full album (from 2011) and before this they had released three demos from what i can see. (would be interesting to hear them to see the progress up to this record)
I had bought this vinyl version of the strength of a persons good word for it but then i had forgot to listen to it....and now when i finally did, wow!
It floored me from the start with the moody intro with thunder and all that melts into the start track that bulldozer your head straight off!
Besides the mighty compositions and punchy production the horror movie & Cthulhu Mythos themes is handled great and levitates the songs personality to a higher level, the song structures is very dynamic and also quite dramatic in a storytelling kind of way.
The riffs is both groovy and hard hitting and the whole band is tight as a gorillas butt!
Their sound is rooted in old school but has a distinct updated sound as well without putting you off.....no its not like the new 20 buck spinn super nasty raw death metal wave (which i also enjoy of course) but that dont take anything away from this bands deadly power.
Also the variation through out the album is well structured with different tempos put in the right places to make the whole experience flow like a river of blood, it has a distinct Swedish death metal feel but not in a copy-cat way plus their takes on the lyrics has a strong personal touch.
So if you are like me and never have taken the time and listen to PUTERAEON do it now if you like to indulge in some tasty cold nordic intestines.....
One thing to have in mind is that i review the vinyl version with eleven songs and the CD has 13 songs.... i dont miss anything and more songs could only make it feel bloated, it is already almost 50 minutes so i would not change anything. Plus the vinyl cover art looks even better with some minor changes.

Immatura Morte - the schizophrenic damnation
As this is a pretty obscure Mexican one-man band(Besharth is the creator) i am happy to see it getting released & spread outside its home country on labels like Hatework Propaganda (Germany) and Perverse Homage (USA), well deserved i think. (also if you fins the latest RAW WAR-zine i did an interview with the man there as well)
This new album "The Schizophrenic Damnation" continues on its threaded path of dwelving into the creators mental state and battling the Schizo demons from both an occult viewpoint and a personal one both in a destructive AND a constructive way...at least thats how i feel about it.
It is a frantic and melancholic journey and feels heavy on one's shoulders but it feels also that it goes forward even if its minimal in steps (psychologically speaking), it is dissonant and it is dipped in a hysteria one easily can imagine one feels from having these spiritual weights all life, how will this end? How can a person get a stabel structure on a spiritual highway crossing storming inside?
Beats me but the musical consecration IM presents add something to me personally and dont retract so that would count as a good result i feel.
If you new to this band and feel like giving it a try prepare for a twisted and raw black metal with a flair for morbid melodies that slowly drown you in a void.
Last song here is my top track pick, it hits that sweat spot with a solid balance of what i enjoy from IM, it encapsules all pain from Besharth and combines it with ash bleak compositions that elevates the whole into a grand ending.
