Serpent Ascending Interview!

Today we sit down and converse with the sole master of the occult Finnish black metal band Serpent Ascending.

1. Greetings Jarno!
Let us start talking about the lingering present!
From what i understand you are about to soon drop the first full album called "Aṇaṅku", will I, Voidhanger Records release this one as the they did with the last one? and is there a release date?

Hails! The release date of Aṇaṅku was September 16. I, Voidhanger released
this on as well.

2. Regarding the album title i assume it is focused around the ancient Mesopotamian deities Anunnaki? What is your view on that matter, in what way do you believe they existed if at all?
And how was it to work on the record? Is the music style a continuation from the last or have you transformed in some ways?
-Interesting question to which I am unfortunately too ignorant to give a good answer. Actually Aṇaṅku is a different concept from ancient Tamil language and the word was chosen because it is widely unused and unknown, in many senses, but also because of it's meanings of course. This is a nod to my earlier interests towards Indian and Asian esoteric traditions from where the process began though it ended up in something quite different.
The album turned out to have emphasis mostly on Northern European culture and identity from which it seeks to find the hidden sacred force that the word Aṇaṅku symbolises in the context. The album is adoration to Earth's and Nature's holiness, soil, blood and death.
The theme of the album is intentionally problematic, sometimes violent and
erroneous, mesmerizing and dreamlike but seeking a direction through all surface level simplifications.

The album picks up some influences from The Enigma Unsettled and takes them further. Making Aṇaṅku was a long process as all the pieces had to fit together and mostly the atmospheric and melodic side of The Enigma Unsettled is audible here and there will be other records that will continue with different themes and influences.

3. I cant say for sure but i got the impression that "The Enigma Unsettled" was the release that put you on the death metal map! How was it back in 2011 when you composed it? I really like the cover art also, who did that one? And talking about art, you seem to be into a bit more surreal taste then more traditional death/black metal covers.

-The cover art for The Enigma Unsettled was painted by Wiley Trieff who seems to have provided some art for different publications since then. At least I've seen some occult magazines with his art as well as other albums.

The Enigma Unsettled was the first Serpent Ascending release that got some larger distribution. The album was compiled of the first two demos and an exclusive song meant only for that release. That means the album's tracks were composed and recorded mainly between 2008 and 2010 and the intention
behind that process was quite different from what we're doing on Aṇaṅku. I'd say that The Enigma Unsettled was more Satanic and occult as theistic concepts. The basic feeling behind The Enigma Unsettled and the process of writing it was more religious than what is going on these days.

Regarding the cover art, I don't want to use the usual metal album covers and I want the artists who participate to have total freedom in making their art. They can listen to the songs and maybe I can tell a little bit of what the songs are about but I will never give any guide lines to what kind of art they should create or what symbolism should be included. I believe true artists do have such intuition that they will be able to create visuals that fit the music and album concepts. Cover art for Aṇaṅku was created by Finnish artist Veera Pitkänen.

4. Going back even further to 2008 the year before the debut demo "Serpent Ascending", what made you start up this project?
I guess doing all by one self is hard but to have total freedom beats that? What main interests in the occult was/is important to you and Serpent Ascending?

-It all began with more abstract Luciferian inspiration that has slowly evolved towards emphasis on nature and mythical symbolism. Aṇaṅku is more of the latter while the earlier material was based much more
on the luciferian occultism. I had experienced a longer period of lost inspiration but when I found the Luciferian spark within and I was able to re-establish creativity it was the point when Serpent Ascending was founded. From the beginning I wanted to have strict control on the contents of the music and that is why I started everything alone.

5. In one post on the bands fb page you wrote as an answer to some reviewer "Hopefully this reviewer will be one those privileged to witness our downfall on stage as well. This will happen sometime during 2017 - 2030." What was that about and is there some firm plans for any live gigs soon?

-Yes, we have plans to play live during 2017 and have discussed with some other bands to play with them but nothing has been confirmed yet. We'll rehearse the live set first and then see what could be the best
options for us.

6. As i dont know much about you other two bands Desecresy & Nowen,
please tell something about those.

-Desecresy is a band we started with Tommi Grönqvist after we quit Slugathor. We have concentrated on creating certain kind of atmospheric and dark death metal with abstract topics. Traditional in many ways but we have managed to find original sound, especially on our latest two albums Chasmic Transcendence
and Stoic Death. But from now on I am no longer member of the band and Tommi will continue with Desecresy alone.
Nowen is a band I joined in 2005 and since then we have more or less actively
made thrashy death metal with strong Death influence and slight hint of
progressiveness.

7.How do you feel Finlands black/death metal world has been since you entered it?
I mean do you feel some hierarchical order and power struggles?
And is there some town where more cheesy "hip" metal people comes together and is there a opposite place where bands can grow more free? In Sweden we have some town(s) where much great music comes from but also there is unpleasant hipster scenes...

-I don't think there's much "hipness" in the Finnish metal scene.
I guess it's more a problem in Sweden and Norway while Finnish bands often
seem more honest because there is not so much popularity available.
Yet I don't have much connection to any scene now and basically try to
concentrate on simple and basic things in life. It also seems that not so
many young and new people get into underground metal nowadays.

8. So the end is here...thanks for your answers and the last word is yours.

Thank you for the interview!

Nephilim Sword Interview!

1. Hailz and welcome into Swedens own frozen innards! Let us start from the start! When and where did you meet up and realized your black satanic path and to start up Nephilim Sword? What where the main important goals with it and what have you two gotten out of this personally?

- Greetings from British Columbia Canada, the beginnings of my journey with nephilim sword realistically started in 2011 when I recorded the first song for the project called winds of the north I asked my bassist Devin Marshall from my other band at the time if he would like to do a vocal track over the one I had done and that's how he became apart of this black cult. I have not even come close to the goals that I have fore nephilim sword, I will continue to work towards them of course but the project went on hiatus for almost a year. Nephilim sword has been around since 2011 but we did not record holocaustic lord or scorching mountain march till 2012 or 2013 I can't remember at this point, the reason for this is the amount of projects I was involved at the time. We recorded another song around abysmal howls of the pagan moon which is my personal favourite of the songs we have done so far. I personally get a sense of nostalgia now when listening to these songs cause they are old to me but there are new songs in the works.

 2. From what i can find there is one release out, is it a self release? how many copies and is there plans to release it on like tape in the future? and what songs is there to find on it? The ones on youtube is that the whole content or have you only shared some of it?

- I have not yet released anything official for nephilim sword but I have those four songs that are available on YouTube for listening and I have two other unheard songs recorded in 2015 and me and devin are working on 4 new songs so when they are completed all the songs will make up the official debut for nephilim sword and i´m hoping to have that released early 2017.

3.From the one i heard i really like winds of the north & holocaustic lord, really ugly and chaotic and heavy. how would you describe your sound and tell something about the lyrics.

- I would describe the songs as some what different yet still staying somewhat traditional with the black metal sound. Musically winds of the north was inspired by darkthrone the lyrics are about resisting Christianity and embracing our pagan roots. Now holocaustic lord is a different story all together, it was ritual after the consumption of a lot of whiskey, I think lyrically we were trying to be a little provocative, a little obscure and perhaps even a little cheesy hahah, its a weird song the lyrics are mystical and dark but still very straight forward.
it was written after the consumption of a lot of whiskey.

4. What would you say is the most important personal quality & experience in a person to really deliver true black metal?

 - Well first of all if you are going to start a black metal project and make music, I think its important that you the person have been immersed in the music for a long time, as far as true black metal goes I don't really know what that is anymore. The meaning behind black metal could be completely Different to each individual person. I think speaking for myself what it takes is a person who is a seeker of truth, someone who's is not scared of hate, for me black metal is about nature worship, a really cold atmosphere you can find the blue print to the so called "true sound" by listening to under a funeral moon by the amazing band Darkthrone.

5. About past musical activities, i guess there is some other projects under your belts?

 - The only other project that I care to mention is satanica holocaustum venti , I have a self titled release and I'm working on getting more CDs made, I'm also very pleased to say I will be releasing a new satanica holocaustum venti EP called dwelling in candle lit caverns and its fucking crushing very heavy black metal. I was also involved in a metal band called Evermire but it is now defunct.

6. Say two shit releases from this year and two gems!

- I honestly hate the new Metallica and I'm quite sure why people are praising it so much, Tenth region of the night by Drowning the light is my favourite release for 2016 my second favourite is caught up in the gears of application by superjoint !

 7. Regarding the band name what is your view on the Nephilim?

-I don't really have a view on the nephilim i did not come up with the project name, the other half of this cult knows much more about the so called "nephilim" he would give you an interesting answer.

8. What is your view on NWO and political puppet shows?

- My thoughts on the new world order. Now that is an interesting question. I know that it is an actual agenda that certain world leaders want to see happen, its just another communist idea that will fail there are so many traditional people around the world from all cultures and these people would fight and die to prevent any kind of one world government. The government should not be trusted and people need to wake the fuck up.

9. So we are close to the end here in this brief interrogation so to wrap this up can you shed some light into the bands close future, Writing new music i hope?

- Yes absolutely. Be sure to look out for the debut nephilim sword CD. Like I also mentioned I'm coming close to releasing the second satanica holocaustum venti. I will continue to build this black empire with pure hatred I will continue to create my black metal in whatever way I choose, I will never follow any trends or try to rip off other bands. I stay true to myself.

10. Thanks for your time answering this.

- No problem thank you for your interest.

Bergrizen - Scherbengericht

From Ukraine comes this one-man (Myrd'raal) band Bergrizen, i have know about this bands existence some years but the releases have felt very elusive to get ones hands on so i was more then delighted to receive a copy of this 2014 album release!

I have heard good things about the Autism album and the split with Hexenmeister so i had pretty high expectations coming into this...needless to say i was more then satisfied from what i heard on Scherbengericht, you get pretty amazing music here!

If you have not heard Bergrizen before he (or "they" in this case as a second helper/member Mordeth plays the bass and clean guitars) creates a very grand melancholic atmospheric black metal, songs are filled with strong bitter melodic compositions that you will wanna hear many times over. It has both the grand sorrowful smoothness in the sound and the harsh and desperate vocals (think old school Burzumish vocal heritage) that together clash into a very effective package.

If you look for multi layered emotional nostalgic black metal that dont fall into any silly pitfalls that many other bands fall into please do yourself a favor and get a copy of  Scherbengericht! It is professional constructed but without losing any of its dark soul.
All songs are top stuff but i think the last two is my favorites...extra plus to the mighty ending bit.

Track list:
1.     Withered Spring (Intro)     01:46       instrumental
2.     The Blight     07:37
3.     Der Wanderer II (Die Nacht des Raben)     07:34
4.     Scherbengericht (Ein Bild von Misantropie)     08:54
5.     Die with Your God!     09:53

Daemon Foetal Harvest Double Review!

From New South Wales Australia come this death metal band and what first got my attention for them was this album art to their first album "Where It Dwells"(2011), it stood easily out from the crowded death plateau. I really liked the mix of (adult) fairy tail motive and monstrous drooling vision.

To my ears Daemon Foetal Harvest play a mix of old school death and "modern", i feel they honor the past masters (Morbid Angle, Immolation etc) and at the same time live in the present times.... it has pretty savage riff style here that chugs hard and at times almost groovy and at all times headbanger provoking, and i really like the medium dark growls that also shrieks from time to time, intense! Lyrics is more towards serial killer morbid mind states and gore rather then what the cover suggests but they are well written anyhow so that is fine (and disturbs as it is intended to do). even if i enjoy this album as a whole i must say that that song 6,7 and 10 is where they really hit the jackpot! Even if there is blasts and some furious chunks and parts here the overall feeling i get is a more looming beast peace...like a sound track to a monster slowly creeping around in some damp woods.

Most of the songs are your bloody meat and potatoes death metal which is nothing wrong with but these three songs as mentioned is blasting through that and made me hopeful for their next album assault. A extra plus must be given to the intro where you hear a beast take a baby from a crying mother then suddenly you hear Agent Mulder explaining to Scully that this a case of classic Daemon Foetal Harvest! haha that cracks me up every time!

Track list:
1.     Intro     00:41
2.     I Butchered Them All     03:39
3.     Riddled With Parasites     04:52
4.     Hogtied & Headless     03:55
5.     Dead Before I Started     04:43
6.     Dismembered, Buried, Forgotten     03:26
7.     Buckled Body Abortion     04:18
8.     Innocence to Incineration     03:36
9.     I'm Always Watching You     05:21
10.     Where It Dwells     06:28
                        Total:40:59

Over to the second and latest album!
My hopes where more then fulfilled god damn!

This album is a beast and a half! Everything has been churned up to max!
And besides the new found brutality the riffs and compositions is much stronger and more memorable, vocals is like before but also they are even more hateful and insane. Production was good in first album but here it feels even more meatier and organic. I cant really get enough of some songs here like the first and the third and the forth and sixth and and and...hehe yeah it is one of the best death metal albums i have heard for some time actually (others are God Diseases Rebirth of Horror and Carnal Tombs Rotten Remains) Lyrics is like last time pretty much inside the dark gory murder themes but also some like found in the title track a bit on the satanic side with text like "once exiled angel planted his seeds"...thinking of Lucifer.
If you looking for a massive death metal album with delivers both mean grooves, sadistic blasts, riffs that cut your head off and strong melodies  look no further the Daemon Foetal Harvests Beasts of Tribulation (2015)!
Deadly stuff!

Track list:
1.     Rotten Servants Chamber     03:26
2.     Beasts of Tribulation     03:37
3.     Procured for Torment     04:44
4.     Hideous Violation     03:22
5.     Her Lifeless Mouth     03:09
6.     Spectrophilia     04:11
7.     I Love Dissecting Girls     03:00
8.     Beaten, Eyes Hanging from Sockets     03:51

Sodoma Interview!

Here is one of Brazils hellish warrior tribes! From early death/thrash to nowadays blackened death it is full on angel slaughter!

Hailz and thanks for taking time off for this investigation!

M.S.F - We salute all entities that absorb this manifest

2. So correct me if i am wrong but this year marks the 13th unholy year of SODOMA! Looking back at the early times for you before first release, how was those times for you and the band?

M.S.F - Correct, 13th year of total musical detachment, moving on because the focus is to go lower, eroding the divine root and all vision of creator, exposing more and more that you own all your actions and reap only what you sow. And for MATILHA SODOMA FORNIX; It is and will always be tasty, enjoyable and we will continue !! ARGH!

3. Then in 2005 "Sadomazocristo" was released, only a self release or did some label distributed it also? From a song i heard (title track) from it is pretty intense and chaotic. How do you feel about it now and is there any plans on re-releasing it remastered or?

M.S.F - It was released independently and pleasantly, this artifact is very crude, shows how persistent the Horde is. We don't have interest in re-releasing it.

4. In 2008 you gave birth to "Renascida em trevas" and this is also the first music i heard from Sodoma and i feel it is a great and solid release, a bit more monstrous and darker not so much thrash elements as before. was it the same line up? What was the main theme on this? How was it to work with Pagan Blaze label?

M.S.F – Renascida em Trevas is another excellent stillborn generated ... She is a black caw, claiming its space in this physical field, governed by much sonorous chaos. Mental and carnal freedom was present in this manifest.
The Pagan Blaze Label gave the necessary support for the moment that it was released and we are grateful.

5.How would you describe your personal view on Satanism? What do you feel you gain in life walking this path?

M.S.F - It is exploring unknown realities, seeking values such as individuality, pride, independence and renewal. What we earn only matters to us.

 6. Then in 2011 via Funebre Distro the first full album "Sempiterno Agressor" was unleashed into this world! Really massive creation from what i have heard. How was the reception for it? And how was it to play these songs live?

M.S.F – Sempiterno Agressor is another portal, more incarnate and pulsing. We draw from the depths of the flesh and spur to the canonical eyes.

7. And finally this year the second opus "Mutapestaminação" is out! Great artwork i must first say! Who is the artist and this would do great on 12" vinyl! Can you shed some light into the lyrics themes? And was it a hard album to complete?

M.S.F - Since the launch of the Sempiterno Agressor and right after its’ release, we decided that the next opvs would be more personal, that we would hid ourselves from celebrations to absolve energy / hidden messages as much as we could, something more personal. It exposes visions that the Matilha germinated and molded, showing that the adverse part will always be heard, because we are the incommode of the Genesis.

* About the vinyl, we are open to proposals.

8. How is life in your city?

M.S.F - It doesn't matter.

 9. How was it to play at Manifesto Negro ATO 1? and i think i saw you also play now next monday at a fest and also in december at another, damn! Good evil energy!

M.S.F – “Manifesto Negro” was excellent, we distilled some of our poison. This weekend the horde will be present at another manifestation in Teresina - PI, in the "Total Alcoholic Death" In sequence, in the Festival in Recife-PE "Paganus Festival" The certainty is that we will transmit Libertine hidden energies! AVE!

 10. The end has come! Thanks again and the last word is yours to make!

M.S.F - We’re honored to be able to explain the vision of the horde a bit in this artifact, and we will sail free through unknown seas, doing what we want and the way we want to, because we own our actions and so it continues.

AVE!

Oppenheimer / Forgotten Soul - Necrotic entities

Unleash the atomic hate of America!

For you whom already heard Oppenheimers great debut demo "American Hubris" will have a good sense of what in store here but to spell it out better for the others you´ll get a crude and raw track with a good sense of (restrained) riff structures, foreboding and nihilistic approach (i get a Finnish feel here also) that is effective and timeless.

Under the songs five minutes you get dragged out by filthy hands then thrown into a pitch black swamp to drown in....Oppenheimer brings in other words another good track that makes you look forward to even more a full length release.

Next up is Forgotten Soul, they (2 members) has a string of demos and splits under his belt but i cant honestly say i have heard anything from them before so i walked into the party here without knowing what to expect...the almost seven minutes track title "The Specter Of Torment Looms Overhead" is a very fitting title as it sounds very much like that, a looming distorted specter crackles and pops inside a raw and minimal tormented production. it has a more loose construction here compare to Oppenheimer even if they share a similar taste in harshness they are pretty different.

The atmosphere here is its strength rather the composition but that is totally fine and both bands together makes this a interesting ugly split tape.

Black Metal Warfare 4-way split review

Let us go into Germanys Dungeons and listen to this record!
Yeah i am soo funny... anyways Into Dungeons Records have here gathered four foul auras and engraved them forever into black slabbing vinyl! All the bands here is very much enlightened by the second wave black metal.

To start of this nun slaughtering party we have a German band called Intempestus!
It is primitive and filthy sounding, its is quite speedy and engaging but nothing  special really &
and dont inspire me to search more from the band. nothing that sticks in your mind but nevertheless a ok
 start of the split.

Next things start to get better with Antares (also from Germany), here we have a bit slower tempo and a richer slab of raw compositions that as a whole gives me the visions of a hunting Carpathian castle where a lone gestalt withers...very nice atmospheres and has a firm personality! I look forward to more from this band.

Then comes the Greece 2-man band Necrohell! I have heard songs from them before that i really liked and they dont dissapoint here either, they play a very raw but melodic music where cold forest melancholy mixes with sharp killing riffs , grand and ugly. Sinister and inspiring. Also check out Necrohells second and third albums Carpathian Nights & Possessed by Nocturnal Grimness. Grim harvest all the way!

And at the final spot Vent (Germany) steps up the game for a final stretch with this release most personal sounding track of the bunch, a bit bigger sound and not soo harsh sound and includes eerie clean chants, slower tempo again but dripping with soul draining atmospheres. also some nice welcomed different compositions here and there that creates a curious dramatic vibe. Good shit! Check out if you can find the first demo " Reliquiae Doloris" also.

All in all a solid split release! When its more then 2 bands on a split it feels for me more like a band sampler rather then a coherent creation but that does not lessen the songs quality, and also nice to get a collected taste of these obscure bands.

Track list:

Side A - Black
1.     Intempestus - Rites     04:18
2.     Antares - Revelations     03:22
Side B - Metal
3.     Vent - Ariditas!     04:41
4.     Necrohell - Throne in the Vast Forest     03:14
      Total:15:35

Eximperituserqethhzebibšiptugakkathšulweliarzaxułum Interview!

The gates open for an indulgence of a occult technical Death Metal band from Minsk!

1. Greetings!
How are the autumn treating you in Minsk?
I have little knowledge about Belarus besides some death metal bands and what I read earlier this year that Br602,307 was allocated state budget for restoration and reconstruction of historical and cultural sites.
 hehe

-Heill Loki Þursakyndill! The autumn in Minsk is much more like the realms Niflheim in their worst manifestations.
But at the same time it is the most spiritualizing time of the year. The history of our
country interlaces with myths and conjectures that are lost under the piles of centuries.
The territory that once was a part of the biggest state in the Medieval Europe,
raised its glory beyond the clouds and ignominiously fell under the claims of more
greedy and ambitious neighbors. Multiple times broken, perplexed, erased from the
chronicles of heroic deeds and doomed to oblivion country with its own unique culture,
language and character. I’ve been traveling through Sweden recently and I can say
that our countries resemble in nature and landscape. It would be relevant to mention
a curious fact that we even had the same king at some point in the middle ages
(Sigismund Vasa). (To read more about this epoch look into the history of conquests
 of Sweden 1655-1660 A.D.)

2. Tell me about have it all started back in 2009. And besides the music how you came up with that name? I guess some of you is deeply invested into the Sumerian/Babylonian Mysticism and other occult realms.

-The way from the awakening lies in the abyss of times, the names and the deeds are consent to oblivion, for they are full of imperfection and grief. As we see it, the only thing that matters is the creation in which we breathed in the fatal storms of magic. What concerns the band name – it was a conceptual continuation of song titles. An author's individual agglutinative neologism. In it's creation there were used some Latin, Ancient Egyptian, Akkadian and Sumerian terms of the Chaosatanic tradition. It entirely reveals the unutterable name of the anti universe. When divided into fragments, it creates the magic spell of the formless Lords of the prior Darkness.
And your guess is on the point: all the members of our order have deep knowledge in the mysteries of the ancient societies, and they are also initiated into the studies of death, it can be witnessed in the musical and poetic components of our creation.

3. How was the reactions when the first release "promo 2013" was unleashed? Was it only in digital format? I can’t really find these two tracks on the album so I guess these are exclusive for the promo?

- In general, the release was welcomed. We issued the limited series of CDs that were sold out within a few weeks by the collectors from all over the world. Those tracks were not included in the album, since they had lots of nuances. Besides, the authorship belonged to the previous band members.

4. And finally this year the massive debut album was (I won’t even try to write that title out) released! This was my first time I saw Eximperitus existence and with that long intriguing name and logo plus that smashing cover artwork was hooked! I won’t pretend I know a lot about  Anunnaki and all that jizz so please enlighten me a bit...take the short version i guess about the albums story and important points in it.

- This is a pretty vast and polyhedral topic. To touch upon it in brief is like seeing only the gleams of all devouring fire. This album is a folio whose profane pages conceal the postulates of Chaosophy, the echoes of magic systems and secret societies of ancient times. Every line and every melody hide the keys that open the tombs of reduced deities of intergalactic scale. The bloody horizons of Diabolical cults of deserts will reveal to your mind. And the funeral veil of might of the Death Lord will wrap your souls. May everyone commit pilgrimage to the roots of Emptiness and give meaning to the silence.

5. If you would recommend some literature about these topics which books should that be?

- It’s hard to recommend something particular. Assyriology is one of the least examined fields in oriental studies. And very often the literature has such a narrow specialization that it can be only interesting to scientists. In my opinion, the most interesting are those which are directly literary monuments of the ancient times (mythology, epos, poetry), since they were the least subjected to distortion and interpretations in favor of influence of times (as opposed to the official history). Surely, it won’t be useless to get acquainted with the history of conquests and succession to the throne, but it would be much more reasonable to pour the wisdom from the sourcebooks. Also, for better comprehension of some terms it’s worth paying attention to the textbooks and dictionaries of dead languages of the Ancient East. The knowledge is everywhere, but how strong you are to use it?

6. How does your rehearsal space look like? and how would a typical rehearsal look like for an outsider?

-Nothing special. It’s quite a standard working process. Tense concentration of energy and will.

7. I saw you plan to hit the road next year, i guess you played some gigs before this. How has those gigs been? Any good venues in your city?

-At this point we are not interested in tours, but only exclusive shows. We are working on a setlist and we are waiting for serious offers from the organizers. The band members are experienced live performers, but we’ve never played live as the project.

8. Is there some future plan you like to spill? Some distant musical release you working on or? To get some merch where shall one turn? I saw you wrote that you even seen some with unofficial shirts!
